OlĂĄ Jorge, obrigado por entrar em contato. Eu realmente aprecio vocĂȘ tendo interesse no meu trabalho. TĂȘm sido uns anos muito difĂceis, entĂŁo estou me esforçando para me manter positivo e ser produtivo. Estou parado em Nova York desde fevereiro. Cresci aqui, entĂŁo tudo Ă© familiar e confortĂĄvel, mas posso estar pronto para uma mudança de cenĂĄrio.
2) ParabĂ©ns pelo seu novo lançamento, EP MMXX! Eu gostei muito, especialmente ‘The One’. Onde vocĂȘ o gravou?
Obrigado, eu realmente aprecio isso. Ă interessante que vocĂȘ goste de "The One" porque a energia da mĂșsica Ă© muito sutil. A mĂșsica nĂŁo era para ser cativante ou pop e eu achei que a maioria das pessoas iria pulĂĄ-la. Eu faço a maioria das gravaçÔes em meu estĂșdio caseiro. Eu tento evitar grandes estĂșdios a menos que tenha que gravar bateria. Prefiro ficar sozinho ou com outra pessoa na sala. Algumas pessoas gostam de ambientes de alta energia ou alta pressĂŁo. Acho que estĂĄ tudo bem, desde que a energia seja positiva e o trabalho seja feito.
3) Quais artistas vocĂȘ poderia citar como as influĂȘncias mais importantes no novo EP?
NĂŁo tenho certeza. Eu nĂŁo ouço mĂșsica quando estou trabalhando. Se ouço mĂșsica, começo a comparar e achar que meu trabalho nĂŁo Ă© muito bom. Ă difĂcil de explicar. Tentei manter essas mĂșsicas e a produção muito simples e diretas. Nunca sei o que dizer quando as pessoas me perguntam que tipo de mĂșsica eu faço. Eu nĂŁo sei sobre gĂȘneros. Eu atualmente tenho “Technique” do New Order e “Liquid Swords” do GZA no meu carro. Eu gosto dos clĂĄssicos. NĂŁo conheço muito sobre artistas da minha idade ou mais jovens. Machinedrum e Jimmy Edgar sĂŁo mais jovens do que eu. Acho que ambos sĂŁo super talentosos. Outsider Ă© um artista de Dublin que conheci recentemente. Ele Ă© fantĂĄstico. 4) Em uma entrevista recente para a Substream Magazine, vocĂȘ disse isso sobre "Signs of Life": "Começou como uma mĂșsica que eu estava escrevendo para Dolores (O’Riordan) e acabou sendo uma mĂșsica sobre Dolores..." Muitos fĂŁs dos Cranberries acreditam que Dolores escreveu "Summer Song "(do ĂĄlbum In The End) sobre vocĂȘ. Qual sua opiniĂŁo sobre isso?
“Summer Song” nĂŁo Ă© sobre mim. Dolores e Dan Brodbeck jĂĄ estavam trabalhando em “Summer Song” quando nos conhecemos. A letra nĂŁo mudou desde a primeira vez que a ouvi. Dan Ă© um excelente produtor e mixer. Sua contribuição em “In The End” Ă© profunda. “Signs Of Life” era para ser uma canção do D.A.R.K. Nunca gravamos os vocais porque eu sempre mudava as letras. Eu nĂŁo tinha certeza do que estava tentando dizer naquele tempo.
AlguĂ©m fez essa pergunta na entrevista do Grammy. Eu dei minha resposta honesta: "NĂŁo sei." NĂŁo ouvi falar de nenhum plano concreto, mas espero que saia logo. Ă difĂcil para mim falar sobre isso agora. Parece um peso no meu peito. Acho que Ă© um disco forte e as pessoas vĂŁo gostar disso. Eu sou uma pessoa espiritual e tenho fĂ© que tudo acontecerĂĄ quando for o devido momento.
6) Como foi a idĂ©ia de fazer um cover de 'Nothing Compares 2 U’? Ă uma Ăłtima versĂŁo!
Na verdade, nĂŁo consegui compor muito em 2018. Ainda estou tentando me recuperar nesse aspecto. Eu procurei gravar vĂĄrios covers para me manter ocupado. AlĂ©m de Prince, gravei covers de The Church, New Order, The Cure, David Bowie e algumas outras mĂșsicas que eu amava quando era adolescente. Alguns deles soaram muito bons, mas eu nĂŁo planejava lançar nenhum deles. Mais tarde, em 2019, estava trabalhando com meu amigo Adrian Spoleti. Eu mostrei a ele minha versĂŁo de “Nothing Compares 2 U” e expliquei que estava tendo dificuldade em acertar os vocais. Ele me perguntou se poderia tentar e gravamos seus vocais em duas tomadas. Seu desempenho realmente me emocionou. Eu mantive o arranjo muito simples para manter o foco em sua voz. A gravação foi espontĂąnea, assim como a decisĂŁo de lançar a mĂșsica. Foi uma decisĂŁo emocional, nĂŁo prĂĄtica.
7) Em uma postagem do perfil oficial do D.A.R.K. no Instagram, de 9 de abril de 2016, vocĂȘs publicaram um pequeno vĂdeo com uma Ăłtima prĂ©via da mĂșsica e a seguinte legenda "Over and out...". Eu gostei demais e queria saber se poderemos ouvir a versĂŁo completa em breve.
“Over and out...” sim, eu me lembro. Foi uma filmagem aleatĂłria com meu celular: andando de tĂĄxi na Costa Rica e Dolores andando no AirTrain no aeroporto Kennedy (aeroporto JFK, de Nova York). A mĂșsica se chama “Look At You Now”. Tem uma longa histĂłria começando como uma mĂșsica do Jetlag. Andy Rourke e eu escrevemos a mĂșsica hĂĄ quase 10 anos. Eu mudei as letras e melodias vocais vĂĄrias vezes ao longo dos anos. Existem pelo menos trĂȘs gravaçÔes diferentes dela. Tentamos incluĂ-la em "Science Agrees", mas nĂŁo parecia um trabalho finalizado. Dolores e eu mudamos as letras e melodias novamente em 2017. Espero vĂȘ-la lançada junto com o segundo LP.
8) Conte-nos: como foi estar em turnĂȘ com os Cranberries?
Ă provĂĄvel que eu goste de viajar mais do que fazer mĂșsica. Claro, Ă© a graça divina fazer o que vocĂȘ ama com as pessoas que vocĂȘ ama. Foi muito legal se conectar com os fĂŁs de Dolores e conhecer tantas pessoas adorĂĄveis. Foi uma experiĂȘncia de aprendizado sĂ©rio tambĂ©m. O trabalho no estĂșdio Ă© confortĂĄvel e natural para mim - Dolores e eu trabalhamos juntos sem esforço. Estar no palco Ă© completamente diferente. Foi assustador nas primeiras vezes. Meu primeiro show com a banda foi em um estĂĄdio enorme. Eu estava com medo de olhar para o pĂșblico e tremia durante o show (e por vĂĄrias horas apĂłs o show). Eu nunca vi tantas pessoas antes. Noel e Ferg (Fergal Lawler) foram muito bons com o contato visual para me ajudar a manter a calma e o foco. Noel costumava se virar para me lembrar se uma mudança em uma mĂșsica estava por vir. Ăs vezes, ele apenas ria se eu mostrasse um olhar preocupado. Isso foi muito Ăștil e gentil. Depois que consegui relaxar, foi incrĂvel observar o fluxo de energia que se movia entre Dolores e as milhares de pessoas ali. NĂŁo Ă© algo que consigo descrever com palavras. Imagino que tenha sido uma experiĂȘncia espiritual para todos no palco e na platĂ©ia.

9) ApĂłs este lançamento, quais sĂŁo seus planos? VocĂȘ pretende fazer uma turnĂȘ? Se sim, vocĂȘ deveria incluir o Brasil em sua programação.
Ă difĂcil fazer planos agora. O planeta inteiro ficou um pouco estranho. Vou continuar a gravar e vou tentar escrever. Recentemente, entrei em estĂșdio com um cantor / compositor que conheci localmente e conseguimos alguns resultados interessantes. Pode se transformar em um novo projeto. Eu sĂł quero fazer coisas bonitas enquanto estou aqui. Eu nĂŁo me importo como isso vai acontecer, contanto que eu esteja cercado por ternura e gentileza. A vida Ă© muito curta para energia negativa. Poderia ser bom tocar novamente. Eu estava começando a organizar datas de shows quando o Covid explodiu. Eu estava atĂ© procurando datas de DJs, mas todos esses planos desmoronaram, Ă© claro. Sinto que voltar Ă estrada pode ser uma maneira de me curar e me reconectar com as pessoas. Dolores e Andy sempre falaram muito sobre o tempo que passaram no Brasil, mas eu nunca tive a chance de me visitar. O Brasil estĂĄ no topo da minha lista de lugares para explorar. Se eu tivesse a oportunidade de reservar vĂĄrias datas e passar um mĂȘs aĂ, iria em um piscar de olhos.

1 - Hi OlĂ©, it's Jorge of "The Cranberries Brazil", talking from BrasĂlia, Brazil. First, I'd like to state how privileged I'm to interview you. Where have you been nowadays?
Hello Jorge, thanks for reaching out. I really appreciate you taking an interest in my work.
It’s been a very difficult couple of years, so I’m making an effort to keep positive and to be productive. I’ve been stuck in New York since February. I grew up here so everything is familiar and comfortable but I might be ready for a change of scenery.
2 - Congratulations for your new release, EP MMXX! I enjoyed it a lot, specially ‘The One’. Where did you record it?
Thanks, I really appreciate that. It’s interesting that you like “the One” because the energy in the song is very subtle. The song wasn’t Intended to be catchy or poppy and I thought most people would skip right past it.
I make most of the recordings in my home studio. I try to avoid big studios unless I have to record drums. I prefer to be alone or with one other person in the room. Some people enjoy high energy or high pressure environments. I suppose it’s all good as long as the energy is positive and the work gets done.
3 - Which artists could you cite as the most prominent influences on the new EP?
I’m not sure. I don’t listen to music when I’m working. If I hear music, I start comparing and I start thinking that my own work isn’t very good. It’s hard to explain.
I tried to keep these songs and the production very simple and straightforward. I never know what to say when people ask me what kind of music I make. I don’t know about genres. I have New Order “Technique” and GZA “Liquid Swords” in my car right now. I enjoy the classics. I don’t know much about artists my age or younger. Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar are younger than me. 4 - In a recent interview for Substream Magazine you said this about "Signs of Life": "It started out as a song I was writing for Dolores and ended up being a song about Dolores..." Many Cranberries fans hypothesize that Dolores wrote "Summer Song" (from In The End album) about you. What's your opinion about it?
“Summer Song” is not about me. Dolores and Dan Brodbeck had already been working on “Summer Song” when we first met. The lyrics had not changed from when I first heard it.
Dan is an excellent producer and mixer. His contribution on “In The End” is profound.
“Signs Of Life” was intended to be a D.A.R.K. song. We never recorded the vocals because I kept changing the lyrics. I wasn’t sure what I was trying to say at the time.
5 - Here's a question a lot of fans were wondering about and hoped that someone had asked you on that Grammy discussions earlier this year. When Dolores unfortunately passed away in 2018, D.A.R.K. released an official statement, mentioning: "At the time of her passing, she was in London, working on a mixing session with Martin Glover / “Youth” for the follow-up to Science Agrees which hopes to see a future release as that would have been Dolores' wish." Do you (and Andy) plan to release a second D.A.R.K. album?
Someone did ask this question at the Grammy discussion. I gave my honest answer: “I don’t know.”
I haven’t heard of any concrete plans but I hope it comes out soon. It’s difficult for me to talk about right now. It feels like a weight on my chest. I think it’s a strong record and people would appreciate it. I’m a spiritual person and I have faith that everything will happen when it’s intended to happen.
6 – What was the idea of doing a cover of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' like? It's a great version!
I wasn’t really able to write much in 2018. I’m still trying to regain my footing in that respect. I tracked several covers to keep myself busy. Besides Prince, I recorded covers of The Church, New Order, The Cure, David Bowie and a few other things that I loved as a teenager. Some of these sound pretty good but I didn’t plan on releasing any of them.
Later in 2019, I was doing some work with my friend Adrian Spoleti. I showed him my version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” and explained that I was having a difficult time nailing the vocals. He asked me if he could have a go and we recorded his vocals in two takes. His performance really moved me. I kept the arrangement very simple to keep the focus on his voice. The recording was spontaneous as was the decision to release the song. It was an emotional decision, not a practical one.
7 – On a post of D.A.R.K.'s official Instagram profile, from April 9th, 2016, you published a short video with a great song preview and the following caption "Over and out...". I loved it and wonder if we may hear the full version soon.
“Over and out...” yes, I remember. It was random footage from my phone: riding in a taxi in Costa Rica and Dolores riding the AirTran at Kennedy airport. The song is called “Look At You Now”. It has a long history starting as a Jetlag song. Andy Rourke and I wrote the music almost 10 years ago. I changed the lyrics and vocal melodies several times over the years. There are at least three different recordings of it. We tried to include it on “Science Agrees” but it didn’t feel finished. Dolores and I changed the lyrics and melodies again in 2017. I hope to see it released along with the second LP.
8 - Tell us what it was like to be on tour with The Cranberries?
I might enjoy traveling more than making music. Of course, it’s Holy Grace to do what you love with people you love. It was really cool to connect with Dolores’ fans and to meet so many lovely people. It was a serious learning experience too. Studio work is comfortable and natural for me - Dolores and I worked effortlessly together. Being on stage is completely different. It was scary the first few times. My first show with the band was a massive stadium. I was afraid to look up at the audience and I was shaking during the gig (and for several hours after the gig). I’ve never seen so many people before. Noel and Ferg were very good with the eye contact to help keep me calm and focused. Noel would often turn around to remind me if a change in a song was coming. Sometimes he’d just laugh if I had a worried looking head on me. That was really helpful and kind.
Once I was able to relax, it was amazing to observe the flow of energy that was moving between Dolores and the thousands of people there. It’s not something I’m able to describe with words. I imagine it was a spiritual experience for everyone on stage and in the audience.
9 - After this release, what are your plans? Do you intend to tour? If so , you should include Brazil in your schedule.
It’s difficult to make plans right now. The entire planet has gone a bit strange. I’ll continue to record and I will try to write. I recently went into the studio with a singer/songwriter that I met locally and we got some interesting results. It might turn into a new project. I just want to make beautiful things while I’m here. I don’t care how it happens as long as I’m surrounded by warmth and kindness. Life is too short for negative energy.
It might be nice to perform again. I was starting to organize concert dates just as Covid exploded. I was even looking at DJ dates but all those plans fell apart, of course. I feel that getting back on the road might be a way for me to heal and to reconnect with people. Both Dolores and Andy always spoke highly of their time in Brazil, but I’ve never had the chance to visit myself. Brazil is high on my list of places to explore. If I had an opportunity to book multiple dates and spend a month there, I would go in a heartbeat.
