Entrevista exclusiva com The Hand!

Maurizio di Bona, mais conhecido pelo apelido de The Hand, uma unanimidade entre os fãs do The Cranberries quando o assunto é desenho, teve a enorme gentileza de ceder o seu tempo e responder à entrevista que a equipe do The Cranberries Brasil o enviou. E aqui está a entrevista, na qual o artista italiano conta algumas curiosidades e revela alguns projetos. Muito Obrigado, The Hand!

1) Quando você descobriu que tinha talento para desenhar cartoons? 

The Hand: Quando as pessoas ao meu redor me fizeram perceber esse talento. Ele veio e se revelou com normalidade. Lembro-me de quando estava no primário desenhando e outras crianças se aglomeravam para me ver desenhar. Primeiro meus colegas de turma, depois os das outras salas. 

2) Quando você começou a gostar do The Cranberries? Diga algo que o conectou a banda! 

The Hand: Tenho costume de ouvir música enquanto desenho. Eu me lembro perfeitamente da tarde em que ouvi Zombie na rádio pela primeira vez e a necessidade imediata de descobrir qual era aquela banda com aquela cantora incrível! Dias depois eu já estava com o álbum “No Need to Argue” na minha mesa e, super inspirado pelas poucas fotos do livreto, criei uma breve história em quadrinhos intitulada “A flauta de prata”. O roteiro era sobre três rapazes que encontraram uma antiga flauta mágica escondida na areia da praia. Durante a noite, o instrumento se transformou em uma garota e na manhã seguinte eles acordaram com Dolores cantando. 

3) Essa pode ser difícil de responder, mas qual a sua música preferida da banda. Comente. 

The Hand: Se tem que ser somente uma, eu diria Ridiculous Thoughts. Talvez porque seja a primeira música que me vem à mente toda vez que penso na minha primeira viagem à Irlanda. 

4) Como surgiu a parceria com a banda e desenhá-los? 

The Hand: É sempre engraçado recordar de tudo isso. Enviei o conto que descrevi acima [“A flauta de prata”] para a caixa-postal da banda, anunciada em uma revista – não havia internet naquela época – e depois enviei outras histórias, como uma série de Dolores com roupas diferentes. Mas não recebi nenhum retorno. Mais tarde, fui a Dunquin, a pequena aldeia no topo de um penhasco inacreditável, onde Dolores e seu marido viviam, e deixei alguns desenhos pendurados no portão da suposta casa deles. Ainda não sei como tudo aconteceu, mas recebi um e-mail do gerente de turnê da banda [Sett] e Don me telefonou pedindo que criasse designs para produtos. 

Nota The Cranberries Brasil: Dunquin é um pequeníssimo vilarejo irlandês. O censo de 2011 registrou apenas 178 habitantes! 

5) Você encontrou Dolores pessoalmente? Se sim, conte como foi! 

The Hand: Sim, infelizmente apenas uma vez. Foi em Firenze [Itália], durante a turnê Stars. [O show da banda em Firenze foi em 18/11/2002]. Eu precisava falar com Don sobre novos projetos. Ela me pareceu incrivelmente pequena e quando eu a abracei estava com medo de apertá-la muito forte... o mesmo sentimento de quando você lida com algum objeto de cristal com risco de quebrar se não tiver cuidado. 

6) Certamente você ainda tem o seu primeiro rascunho ou desenho finalizado da Dolores. 

The Hand: Receio de não ter mais esses primeiros desenhos. Morei em tantos apartamentos desde aquela época que provavelmente se perderam ou ficaram em algum lugar quando me mudei da Itália para a Alemanha, da Alemanha para a Irlanda, da Irlanda para a Polônia... 

Nota The Cranberries Brasil: Depois de vasculhar seus arquivos, The Hand escreve novamente: “Sem chance de encontrar os primeiros esboços, talvez em algum antigo computador se ainda existir... Este é o desenho mais antigo que encontrei, e acho que ainda ninguém o viu...”. O desenho, INÉDITO, a que ele se refere, intitulado “Paparazzi 3 – Vivendo em Dunquin” remete ao vídeo de Free To Decide. Exclusividade The Cranberries Brasil! 

7) A morte de Dolores causou uma comoção e impacto profundo em todos nós. Mas o seu trabalho, felizmente, continuou. Como foi lidar com isso? 

The Hand: É tudo tão absurdo e na verdade ainda não consigo acreditar no que aconteceu. Eu a vejo em um mundo paralelo em forma de borboleta, como ela sempre sonhou em se tornar. É animador ouvir os fãs pedirem para não parar de desenhá-la porque assim ela permanecerá “viva” aos olhos deles. 

Nota The Cranberries Brasil: Em 9 de dezembro do ano passado, dizendo que havia sonhado com a cena na noite anterior, The Hand publicou um desenho de Dolores como uma borboleta, observada por Fergal, Mike e Noel. A outra imagem, tão dolorosa, com Dolores alçando voo, já é de 26 de janeiro de 2018. 

8) Recentemente você criou um calendário homenageando artistas que se foram, como Prince, David Bowie, Amy Whinehouse... De onde veio essa iniciativa? Está em seus planos preparar um exclusivo com Dolores? 

The Hand: O conceito do calendário “Gone” (Ido) foi planejado para 2017 depois que David Bowie e Prince faleceram [em 2016]. Mas eu estava atrasado com o trabalho de edição, então eu adiei para este ano. Eu nunca poderia imaginar o que iria acontecer no último dia 15 de janeiro... Faz tempo que me pedem para criar outro “Calendolores”, como o que eu fiz em 2008. E com certeza farei a edição de 2019 como um último tributo sincero a ela. Inclusive criei um grupo no Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/calendolores2019/) para compartilhar o trabalho em andamento e envolver os fãs com ideias, sugestões e apoio. 

Nota The Cranberries Brasil: Dias após ter nos enviado as respostas, The Hand infelizmente informou que devido à reformulações de lançamentos de seu editor, o projeto do "Calendolores" para 2019 terá de ser provisoriamente suspenso. Provavelmente será feito um "Crowfounding". Portanto, aos fãs que ainda não fazem parte do grupo no Facebook, entrem já e ajudem esse projeto a se tornar realidade!

9) Você está participando daquele concurso de Limerick que escolherá um desenho para ser pintado em um mural da cidade #SpeakersMural. Quais são suas expectativas sobre isso? E se você fosse um dos juízes, que desenho (dos quais você enviou) você prefere: Dolores solo, Dolores em Zombie ou Dolores em Animal Instinct com borboletas? Boa sorte! 

The Hand: Soube do concurso por uma coincidência e preparei os desenhos rapidamente num par de noites. Estou muito curioso para saber o veredito. Eu torço pelo desenho de Animal Instinct em Limerick e que os outros dois sejam aproveitados em outros muros vazios na Irlanda ou onde quer que me convidem. 

Nota The Cranberries Brasil: O resultado ainda não foi divulgado e The Hand enviou um novo desenho para a disputa, no melhor estilo Van Gogh! Qual o seu preferido? 

10) Diga algo sobre seus projetos futuros. 

The Hand: Sobre o The Cranberries, seria ótimo encontrar tempo e energia para fazer uma biografia da banda em quadrinhos, como inclusive já tínhamos começado a planejar antes da banda se separar anos atrás... mas há tantos outros trabalhos sobre a mesa que nem sei por onde começar!

Exclusive interview with The Hand!

Maurizio di Bona, better known just as The Hand, unanimously among fans of The Cranberries when it comes to drawing, was very kind to give up his time and respond to the interview that The Cranberries Brasil Team sent to him. Here is the interview, in which the Italian artist tells some curiosities and reveals some projects. Thank you so much, The Hand!

1) When did you discover that you had talent for drawing cartoons?

The Hand: When people around make me noticed. Everything revealed by itself and quite normally. I remember when at elementary school I just made my drawings and other children came all around to see it. First from my own classroom, then from other ones. 

2) When did you start liking The Cranberries? Say something that connected you to the band!

The Hand: I’m used to listen music when I make drawings. I remember perfectly the afternoon with Zombie on the radio for the first time and the immediate need to find out which was that band with that amazing singer. After some days I had “No Need to Argue” album on my desk and, overinspired by the few pictures of booklet, I did straight a short comics tale titled “The silver flute”. Plot was about the three guys who found an ancient magic flute hidden in the sand at beach. During the night that instrument changed in a girl and the morning later they woke up with singing Dolores.

3) This may be difficult to answer, but what is your favorite song by The Cranberries? Tell about it.

The Hand: If must be one, I’ld say Ridiculous Thoughts. Maybe because is the first track displayed in my head every time I think back to my first trip to Ireland. 

4) How did you partner with the band and draw them?

The Hand: Always funny to think back all of this. I sent the tale I described above [“The silver flute”] to a mail box of the band, found on a magazine – no internet that time – and later other works like a serie of Dolores with different outfits. But no feedback from anyone. Later I went to Dunquin, the small village at top of an unbelievable cliff, where Dolores and her husband lived, and I left some drawings hanged at supposed gate of their house. Still don’t know how things exactly went, but later I received an email from the tour manager [Sett] and Don called me at phone with requests for merchandise design.

The Cranberries Brasil note: Dunquin is a very small Irish village. The 2011 census registered only 178 inhabitants!

5) Have you found Dolores personally? If so, tell us how it happened!

The Hand: Yes, unfortunately one time only. it happened in Firenze [Italy] during the Stars tour. [The Firenze gig was on 18/11/2002]. I had to talk with Don about new projects. She looked incredibly tiny and when I hugged I was afraid to be too strongly ... you know, same feeling when you handle some fragile crystal artcraft with risk to break if not carefull.

6) Surely you still have your first draft or finished drawing of Dolores.

The Hand: I’m afraid to have not anymore very first stuff. I changed so many flats from that time that probably lost or left somewhere while moving from Italy to Germany, from Germany to Ireland, from Ireland to Poland... 

The Cranberries Brasil note: After scouring his files, The Hand writes again: “No chance to find the first sketches, maybe in some old PC if still exist... This is the oldest drawing I found, no one have seen before I think...”. The drawing, UNPUBLISHED, to which him refers, titled “Paparazzi 3 – Living in Dunquin” reminds to Free To Decide video.

7) The death of Dolores caused a commotion and profound impact on all of us. But his work, fortunately, continued. How was dealing with it?

The Hand: It’s everything absurd and actually I still can’t believe it happened. I see her in a parallel world shaped as a butterfly, like she always dreamt to become. It’s heartening then to hear from fans to never stop drawing her because it keep her still “alive” to their eyes.

The Cranberries Brasil note: On December 9th of last year, saying that he had dreamed of the scene the night before, The Hand published a drawing of Dolores as a butterfly, watched by Fergal, Mike and Noel. The other image, so painful, with Dolores taking flight, is already from January 26th, 2018.

8) Recently you have created a calendar honoring artists who are gone, like Prince, David Bowie, Amy Whinehouse ... Where did this initiative come from? Is it in your plans prepare an exclusive with Dolores?

The Hand: The concept of “Gone” calendar was planned for 2017 after David Bowie and Prince passed away [in 2016]. But I was late with editing work so I delayed to this year. I could never imagine what was going to happen on last l5th of January ... It’s long time I’m asked to create another “Calendolores”, like the one I did in 2008. And absolutely I am going to do the 2019 edition as ultimate heartfelt tribute to her. I’ve just created a FB group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/calendolores2019/) to share work in progress and involve fans with ideas, supports and suggestions. 

Note The Cranberries Brazil: Days after sending us the responses, The Hand unfortunately reported that due to rewrites of its publisher's releases, the "Calendolores" project for 2019 will have to be provisionally suspended. Probably a Crowfounding will be done. So, to fans who are not yet part of the Facebook group, come in now and help make this project come true!

9) You are participating in that Limerick’s contest who will choose a drawing to be painted on a city mural #SpeakersMural. What are your expectations about it? And if you were one of the judges, which drawing (of those sent by you) do you prefer: Dolores solo, Dolores in Zombie or Dolores in Animal Instinct with butterflies one? Good luck!

The Hand: I found it by coincidence and I prepared the submissions quickly in a couple of nights. I am very curious to know the verdict. I’ld be for the Animal Instinct in Limerick and the other two ones on some other empty walls in Ireland or where ever they invite me.

The Cranberries Brasil note: The result has not yet been released and The Hand has sent a new design to the dispute, in the best Van Gogh style! Which do you prefer?

10) Say something about your future projects.

The Hand: About the Cranberries, it would be great to find time and energy to make a biography of the band with comics, like we already started to plan before the band split time ago ... but too many other works on the desk that I donno where to start from.
